CASE
Coastal Aquifer Salinity Evaluation
Version 1.1.0-2 - August 2004
CASE, Coastal Aquifer Salinisation Evaluation, is developed to demonstrate the response of the 'wedge' in a
longitudinal section of an aquifer, when groundwater is pumped from confined aquifers and unconfined aquifers.
Initially, drawdown at the end of the section, due to groundwater pumping is determined by analytical solutions
developed by Theis (1935) for confined aquifers, Neuman (1972) for unconfined aquifers, and the principle of
super position of solutions. The principle of super position allows the analytical solutions to solve for
pumping from several wells, or pumping from a single well at varying discharge rate, or to estimate the rate of
recovery, or a combination of any of these. Subsequently, an estimate of base flow is derived for the section
for every time step, which is used as input to analytical solutions developed by Isaacs and Hunt (1986), to
estimate the toe position of the salt water wedge.
The intended audiences of this tool are regional hydrogeologists, groundwater users and students in groundwater
hydrology. CASE should be used for demonstration and educational purposes only.
