ABSTRACT

The use of permanganate to treat groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents, thus effective in many cases, is expensive and resource consuming. There is a considerable interest among practicing hydrogeologists to have a model of this process in order to design remediation actions, to determine the number and depth of injection wells and length of permanganate treatment. To solve this problem, a new reaction module to simulate destruction of chlorinated solvents with permanganate has been developed and tested for the MODFLOW 2000/RT3D 2.5 modeling environment.
